Are you entitled to flight compensation when your flight is delayed due to bad weather?
These days, many airports are experiencing flight delays or cancellations.
But what are your rights when your flight is canceled or delayed due to bad weather?
___________________________________________________________________________
As a general rule, you are entitled to flight compensation if your flight is canceled less than 14 days before your scheduled departure or if your flight is delayed 3 hours or more.
The amount of compensation depends on where you’re going. For example, on a trip to Thailand, you are entitled to 600 Euro (approx. 4,500 DKK). If four of you are traveling together, your total claim can be as much as DKK 18,000.
However, if there is a so-called “extraordinary circumstance” that could not have been avoided, the airline is not obligated to pay flight compensation.
Whether the airline can invoke this exception depends on the specific circumstances.
A good guideline is how air traffic is otherwise handled. If other airlines can take off and land – perhaps with a shorter delay – this is hardly an “extraordinary circumstance”.
Conversely: If the entire airspace is closed and you might be delayed 3-4 hours, you’re probably not eligible for flight compensation.
