Compensation for canceled flights

If your flight is canceled, you may be entitled to flight compensation.

Flight compensation is a kind of “band-aid on the wound” for the inconvenience of having to adjust to a new travel plan. You could also say that it’s a kind of compensation for the cancellation.

Your flight rights are governed by an EU Regulation from 2004 (REGULATION (EC) No 261/2004 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of February 11, 2004 establishing common rules on compensation and assistance to air passengers in the event of denied boarding and of cancellation or long delay of flights).

When are you entitled to flight compensation for flight cancellations?

You may be entitled to flight compensation if your flight is canceled unless

  1. You have been notified of the cancellation at least two weeks before the scheduled departure time, or
  2. You have been notified of the cancellation between two weeks and seven days before the scheduled time of departure and have been offered re-routing so that you can depart no more than two hours before the scheduled time of departure and arrive at your final destination no later than four hours after the scheduled time of arrival; or
  3. You have been notified of the cancellation less than seven days before the scheduled time of departure and have been offered re-routing so that you can depart no more than one hour before the scheduled time of departure and arrive at your final destination no later than two hours after the scheduled time of arrival.

Only if the airline can prove that there are “extraordinary circumstances” that could not have been avoided, you are not entitled to flight compensation.

For example, an “extraordinary circumstance” could be if the aircraft is hit by birds in the air (what is known in aviation as a “birdstrike”). A technical failure of the aircraft, on the other hand, is not – as a rule – an “extraordinary circumstance”.

What to do if your flight is canceled

If your flight is canceled and there are less than 2 weeks until your scheduled departure, you should:

  • Ask for an explanation of WHY your flight has been canceled, in writing if possible. This will be valuable later when you need to apply for compensation or reimbursement;
  • If the airline offers you a re-routing, ask for the offer in writing (even if you decline the offer). You are rarely obliged to wait for days to get to your destination.

If the airline does not automatically reimburse the expenses it is obliged to reimburse and/or if you do not receive flight compensation, you can contact the airline yourself and request it.

If you want to avoid the hassle – or if the airline rejects your claim – you can also file your case at the Flight attorney.

We would be happy to help you with your compensation or reimbursement claim.

How much can I get in flight compensation?

Compensation is a form of compensation for the flight cancellation.

You are entitled to either DKK 1,865 (250 Euro), DKK 2,985 (400 Euro) or DKK 4,500 (600 Euro) in compensation if your flight is canceled. This applies regardless of where or from whom you purchased your flight tickets. You are also entitled to flight compensation if you have purchased a charter trip or other package tour.

The decisive factor in determining how much flight compensation you are entitled to is the destination – the longer the flight, the greater the compensation. For example, if you are traveling from Denmark to Crete, Mallorca or Malaga (or the opposite direction), you are entitled to approximately DKK 2,985 (equivalent to 400 Euro).

Whether your flight is canceled due to weather or an airline strike, we can help you get compensation.

Compensation for expenses related to cancellation

If the airline cancels your flight and you decline a re-routing, the airline must refund the full purchase price of the ticket. You must receive the money within a week.

If you buy new tickets yourself with another airline and the new tickets are more expensive than the original ones, you can claim the difference.
If the airline does not provide you with reasonable meals, you can buy food and drinks in reasonable quantities and subsequently claim a refund from the airline.
REMEMBER to keep all receipts for your expenses. And remember that the receipts must show what was purchased and when.
The airline is not obliged to cover beer, wine and spirits – not even in connection with meals.

Really good serviceGreat service from start to finish. For me, it was a huge help. I would probably like to be able to do it myself, but it’s great that money just comes into my account without me doing anything.
