Rules about delayed flights with American Airlines

When does the Airline Regulation apply?

Luckily, you have some rights under Regulation (EC) 261/2004. Regulation (EC) 261/2004 if your American Airlines flight is delayed for 3 hours or more.

However, as American Airlines is not a European airline, your right to flight compensation depends on the delay occurring from an airport in Europe.

If you are delayed on your return flight from New York, for example, you are not covered by the Air Regulation, and therefore you are not entitled to flight compensation in such a situation, unfortunately.

Compensation for stopovers

Perhaps more obviously, you’re entitled to compensation if you’re traveling on only one American Airlines flight and that flight is delayed by 4 hours.

However, you are also entitled to flight delay compensation from American Airlines if you have a stopover and the delay is only brief, but means you miss your connecting flight. What matters is when you arrive at your final destination.

For example, you could be traveling with American Airlines from Copenhagen to Washington, and from there with Delta (or another airline) to Los Angeles.

If your flight from Copenhagen to Washington with American Airlines is delayed by 1 hour, so that you miss your flight to Los Angeles and arrive in Los Angeles 5 hours late, you are entitled to flight compensation from American Airlines.
