When are you entitled to flight compensation?
Ryanair cancellation or Ryanair delay?
At Flyadvokaten, we have handled a very large number of cases for passengers who have been stranded at London Stansted after Ryanair canceled their flight.
The typical course of events is that the passengers’ flights have been canceled immediately before departure, and that the passengers have then – for hours – queued at Ryanair’s service desk. When they finally reach the staff, they are offered a new flight home with the airline four days later.
Your claim for reimbursement of airline tickets and other expenses
If you are stranded in Standsted and are told that Ryanair cannot offer you a new flight home until four days later, you are also entitled to flight compensation from Ryanair.
However, you are also entitled to reimbursement for the cost of your new flight tickets, e.g. with SAS from London Heathrow. In addition, Ryanair must pay for your transportation between the two London airports.
How to get a refund and/or compensation from Ryanair
If you contact Ryanair yourself and get no response, don’t be discouraged. Don’t be discouraged if Ryanair denies your claim, claiming “extraordinary circumstances”. This is rarely the case.
If you are unsure about your rights, including whether you are entitled to flight compensation or compensation for flight delay or flight cancellation, we are here to help.

About Ryanair
Ryanair was established in 1985 by three businessmen, one of them Christopher Ryan. The founders were inspired by the American low-cost airline Southwest Airlines.
With over 148 million passengers a year, Ryanair is Europe’s largest airline. The company is headquartered in the Irish town of Swords, which is located just north of the capital Dublin.
Your right to rebook (re-routing)
It goes without saying that most passengers can’t wait four days to get home. And they don’t have to!
According to a ruling from the European Court of Justice, it is the airline’s responsibility to re-route – or more specifically, to rebook the return flight – at the earliest opportunity.
In a judgment of January 2, 2024 from the Eastern High Court, attorney Eva Persson was also successful in her claim that the passengers were entitled to flight compensation.
The case involved a very short delay of just 3 hours and 6 minutes.
Nevertheless, Ryanair had to pay flight compensation because Ryanair’s only “precaution” (to limit the delay) was to complete the flight as soon as possible.
Since Ryanair had not taken or investigated other possible measures to mitigate the delay, such as re-routing passengers to another route (possibly with another airline), Ryanair had not “taken all reasonable measures to avoid or minimize the delay.”
Therefore, the airline passengers should receive compensation from Ryanair for the delay.
