Denied boarding on Swiss International Air Lines?

You are entitled to immediate payment of flight compensation if you are denied boarding by airline staff when you present yourself for check-in or boarding at the airport.

This is stated in REGULATION (EC) No 261/2004 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 11 February 2004 establishing common rules on compensation and assistance to air passengers in the event of denied boarding and of cancellation or long delay of flights. This is the regulation from the EU that we usually call the “Air Regulation”.

Flight compensation for denied boarding?

The European Court of Justice has ruled that it is irrelevant whether the denied boarding is due to overbooking, operational issues or (unjustified) claims from the airline that you, for example, lack a visa or similar.

You may also be denied boarding if Swiss International Air Lines has blocked your return flight because you did not show up for the outbound flight (for reasons attributable to Swiss International Air Lines, such as lack of communication).

In such a situation, you are entitled to flight compensation, as the blocking of the return flight is also considered a denied boarding. This also follows from an EU ruling.

If you are denied boarding, we recommend that you document your presence at the airport. For example, take a photo to prove when you were there and where you tried to check in. You can also ask for a written explanation of the denied boarding from Swiss International Air Lines.

How much can I get in denied boarding compensation?

The compensation per person is calculated according to the Airline Regulation based on the distance between the passengers’ departure destination and the final destination:

  • For flights up to 1,500 km, the compensation can amount to €250;
  • For flights between 1,500 km. and 3,500 km. the compensation can amount to €400;
  • For flights over 3,500 km (and all flights outside the EU), the compensation can amount to €600;

Really good serviceGreat service from start to finish. For me, it was a huge help. I would probably like to be able to do it myself, but it’s great that money just comes into my account without me doing anything.
